Integration, specialization, and adjustment

چکیده
The paper considers the location of two industries in two countries. Both industries are imperfectly competitive, producing goods for final consumption and use as intermediates. Intermediate usage creates cost and demand linkages between firms, encouraging industrial agglomeration. With high trade barriers each industry operates in both locations in order to supply final consumers. At lower trade barriers agglomeration forces dominate and each industry concentrates in a single location. Economic integration therefore induces agglomeration. There are long run gains from integration, but during the adjustment process some of the labour force may suffer lower real wages as relocation of industry occurs. JEL classQicarion: Fl; F12; F15; R3

Adjustment Dynamics of Countries’ Specialization in the European Union
We investigate the adjustment dynamics of countries’ specialization patterns in terms of labor market participation in manufacturing industries for the European Union. Using co-integration and error correction modeling techniques, we find that imbalances in European countries’ specialization are being set off at a rate of about 63 percent within the next period. Adjustment rates for Denmark, Fr...
متن کاملPrototype Integration in Off-line Handwriting Recognition Adaptation
Writer adaptation or specialization is the adjustment of handwriting recognition algorithms to a specific writer’s style of handwriting. Such adjustment yields significantly improved recognition rates over counterpart general recognition algorithms. We present a discussion of a method of prototype integration for writer adaptation and evaluate the results on English and Arabic datasets. The wri...
متن کاملFactor Mobility, Economic Integration and the Location of Industry
This paper examines the importance of factor mobility within countries for the manifestation of agglomeration and location effects emphasized in the new economic geography literature. Working with a model of trade under monopolistic competition, the relationship of factor mobility (in particular labor) to industry adjustment and relocation is developed analytically, and then illustrated with a ...

The paper analyzes how regional financial and trade integration have affected output fluctuations in East Asia. It also controls for possible effects of specialization patterns and exchange rate policies. The findings hint at a convergent direct effect of trade and FDI integration on output fluctuations. Real and financial integration also have sizable indirect effects on output fluctuations th...

Due to timely process of WTO negotiations, unwillingness of advanced industrial countries to give concessions to developing economies regarding tariff and non-tariff barriers on agricultural commodity imports, the ongoing initiatives in Northern hemisphere to establish new and wider free trading areas which will divert trade out of the market from Asian countries, and ineffectiveness of deepeni...
